An IP address might for example be your local IP address as assigned by your Internet Service Provider. This machine (the gateway) will act as a "source" of the packet and the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) will assign an IP address to that gateway that is used to route it through the actual Internet (the routing is defined by a protocol such as IP or TCP/IP).
